Careri has a name of Greek origin perhaps deriving from "caristos", very nice, or perhaps from "care" which in Greek means "top of the mountain" or even from the Latin "careo, carere" wich all refer to the situation of lack of economic resources but a wealth of natural beauty.
The refugees of the contiguous ancient village old of Panduri, destroyed by an earthquake, arrived in Careri in 1507 increasing substantially its population.

The cultural association Francesco Perri was founded in 1992 in Careri (RC) as an act of love towards of the Italian writer Francesco Perri, a native of Careri. Its members are partly residents in Calabria and partly emigrants from all over the world. For this reason the goals of the association are similar to those of the Calabri Vagantes.

The association was born as an act of love towards Francesco Perri, a native of Careri, and the land of Calabria.

At a recent meeting of the founding partners, the statute was revised by unanimous agreement, transforming it into a non-profit association that is currently recognized by the Internal Revenue Service and the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria.

A dedicated website has also been opened:

associazione perri

In the site you can find the announcement of an interesting competition that takes place during 2021 entitled "the art of imagining" that can be downloaded from:

The objective of the Association is to build a community around the figure of the Calabrian writer based on those who have not left Calabria and those who, like him, have emigrated.

A sort of social community that through its own contributions recalls, remembers and discusses the themes so dear to Francesco Perri, from the artistic ones related to the landscapes and the people of Calabria to the social ones related to the usurpation of communal lands and the consequent mass emigration of peasants deprived of the most basic means of livelihood.

The same human vicissitudes of Francesco Perri can be read as a story of emigration, similar to that of many of his fellow countrymen that he described in perhaps his most beloved work "Emigrants", which begins by precisely describing the usurpation of public common lands to the detriment of Calabrian peasants.

In addition to "Emigrants" he wrote: Primi canti, La rapsodia di Caporetto, Il Fascismo, La battaglia di Pan, I Conquistatori, La strage, Leggende calabresi, Come si lavora nel mondo, Favola bella, Povero cuore, L'idolo che torna, Capitan Bavastro, Il discepolo ignoto, Racconti d'Aspromonte, La Missione del Redentore, Medaglie d'oro, Fra Diavolo, L'amante di zia Amalietta, Nel paese dell'ulivo, Storia del lupo Kola and other works.

The Association intends to gradually publish the whole work and to promote culture, Calabrian art and activities aimed at social gathering, civil growth and culture of legality.
