Logo of the "Bergamot of Reggio Calabria" project
From the double helix of DNA (top) are born the flowers of orange blossom (center) and the fruit of the bergamot plant (bottom) which inside contains an ancient map of Calabria.
The logo was registered in 2019 at the Chamber of Commerce of Reggio Calabria.
The cultivation of bergamot is a typically Calabrian resource.
However, to date there is no biological test capable of certifying the quality and origin of the products of the Calabrian bergamot chain.
The cultivation of bergamot is a typically Calabrian resource.
However, to date there is no biological test capable of certifying the quality and origin of the products of the Calabrian bergamot chain.
This serious handicap can be overcome by the development of a test based on DNA analysis that certifies the origin and quality of bergamot fruit and the products of its supply chain.
The DNA sequence of bergamot has never been studied unlike what has been done in the past for other citrus fruits.
Having obtained this sequence, it will be possible to build a biotechnological instrument (berg-test) of practical use because it will be able to certify the samples of bergamot essence and juice that arrive on the market.
The following scientific paper describes some of the many beneficial effects that the molecules present in the bergamot fruit have on human health.
